Content attributes are a powerful way to structure your content in Sana. Move beyond basic tags: you can set expiration dates, assign content owners, add notes, and so much more.
Content attributes allow you to configure a set of your own custom attributes, which you can categorize into different types and then attach to you content. These custom content attributes give you more flexibility & ease in organizing, finding and managing your content.
Then, admins can filter and browse content based on these attributes with ease.
π‘ Content attributes are replacing an old feature, Tags.
Tags no longer exist in Manage, and Content attributes have been added to Manage > Content > Manage attributes
How does Content attributes work?
In Content attributes, you can add:
Categories: which will be displayed on the Home page for learners with access to the content. Categories is the only default Content attribute that cannot be removed. However, categories on the home page and the visibility of these for different users depends on the visibility of the specific courses within the category.
Attributes: specific attributes you want to attach to the course, where you can choose the visibility of these for learners. Meaning, you can have both hidden (only available for admins) and visible attributes for maximized sorting.
Guide
Go to Manage > Content > Manage attributes
Categories will always appear on top of the content attributes list
All previously added tags are merged here
For each category, you can set an image, a title and a description
Categories are always visible to learners by default.

You will be able to choose from different attribute types: Single/Multi select, Date, Text, or Number input
After selecting the attribute type:

Depending on the attribute type, add Options.
How can you use custom attributes?
Some specific examples of what you can do with custom content attributes:
Set expiration dates: By using Date stamp Example: Use date stamp to set what date a specific course is set to expire. Make sure to set a baseline for how often you need to update courses. Could be calculated with for example: Publish date + 2 years. By doing so, you can then filter in content to detect courses that needs updating. |
Assign content owners: By using Text input |
Add difficulty level: By using Single Select Example: Mark courses with Easy, Intermediate and Difficult to make it easy for learners to understand the level of the content. |
Add points for courses: By using Number input Example: Mark how many points you earn following the completion of this course. |
Add multiple target markets: By using Multi Select Example: Mark what departments, countries or areas the content is covering |
Attaching Attribute and Category to a course
Go to a course you have edit access for.
Go to Settings > Attributes.
Select one or more Categories/Attributes.
For Learners, the attributes you attach to courses (that are set to visible for learners) will appear beneath the course description before they click "Start" or "Resume learning".
Filtering courses based on content attributes
Go to Manage > Content to filter courses based on your custom attributes created.
You can build out your filters using as many attributes as you like. If you leave the page or refresh your browser, your filters will remain intact!
FAQ
Where do learners see the created categories?
Once you have created your Category and attached it to content, the category and its image will display as a category on the home page.
A learner only sees the category and content within if:
The content is assigned to the learner
The content visibility is set to visible everywhere
They are a member of a teamspace containing the content
For custom attributes, this depends on the visibility of the attribute.
If the attribute is visible, the attribute will appear beneath the course description before they click "Start" or "Resume learning".
Why does my new Category not appear on the Home page?
If you have created a Category without adding any content attached to it, or not made the content visible to anyone it will not appear on the home page.
Can I add multiple Attributes/Categories to a course?
Yes
How are Categories organized on the homepage?
The sorting of the categorizes on the homepage is based on a 'ranking' of the tags. The ranking looks at:
Popularity of the content with the tags (how many users that have interact with a course the past 30 days.)
Number of available courses for that tag
If the tag is one of the most studied categories for the specific user
This sorting logic is implemented to optimize the homepage for personalization, ensuring that each user sees the most relevant and engaging content tailored to their interests and interactions.
