What is SCORM?

Simply put, SCORM (Shareable Content Object Reference Model) is a compliant course authoring tool which allows you to migrate courses between different LMS (Learning Management Systems). You can thereby create courses in Sana, export them via SCORM to another LMS, and have your users take Sana courses there.

💡 Only Administrators have the ability to export in SCORM format, Group Admins can only export PDFs

How to export as SCORM 1.2

💡 SCORM export functionality is turned off by default, to set this up, contact your Customer Success Manager (CSM)

Once the function is active please follow the below steps:

  1. Open editor of Published course

  2. Click Share in the top right

  3. Choose Export tab then Click Export (under ‘Export SCORM’ title)

Importing user identities with Single Sign-On (SSO) for SCORM

When exporting Sana courses as a SCORM format intended to be used on an external LMS, a common challenge has been managing user identities. This is especially the case when users access Sana through multiple authentication methods, such as SCORM and Single Sign-On (SSO). This can lead to the creation of duplicate user profiles, complicating user management and data analysis.

Solution: Unified User Authentication for SCORM

To address this, we have a setting that allows SCORM courses to identify users by SSO instead of creating a separate SCORM user. This setting ensures a unified user experience and simplifies user management by maintaining a single user profile across different access methods.

💡 Please contact your CSM to activate this setting

How It Works

This option can be activated for all SCORM files within an organization, however, only applies to new exports, not those exported in the past.

Important: Your organization must have SSO configured on your Sana account for this to work, learn more here

Here’s how it functions from a learner perspective:

  1. For users not already logged in through SSO:

    • In your organizations external LMS when a learner launches a SCORM, a window prompts the user to log in.

    • The window initiates the authentication flow to Sana LMS (typically via SAML SSO).

    • Once the user completes the sign-in, the window closes.

    • The Sana LMS for the specific course is now logged in within an iFrame, and the course content is displayed.

  2. For Users Already Logged into Sana:

    • When launching the SCORM in the external LMS the course content appears directly without the need for additional logins.

From an administrative standpoint, once a user has logged in, their progress for the respective course is accurately tracked and displayed on the Sana platform.

Benefits

This integration significantly enhances the user experience by providing seamless access to courses regardless of the entry point, reducing confusion and streamlining the learning process. It also improves administrative efficiency by eliminating duplicate user profiles and simplifying the tracking of user progress and activities across the platform.
