Course editions in Sana allow admins to group together versions of the same course translated into multiple languages, enabling learners to automatically access the course in their preferred language.

What is the value of using course editions?

For learners

Personalized learning

Course editions allow learners to choose their preferred language when taking a course.

This ensures that the learning experience is tailored to their language skills, making the content more accessible and understandable.

For admins

More efficient course management

Course editions simplify the process of managing multilingual courses.

Admins can group together courses translated into multiple languages with a few clicks, making it easier to manage and organize the courses, track analytics of learner progress, and much more.

Use case example: Multilingual onboardings

Course editions allow the same course to be delivered in multiple languages, ensuring that all employees can access the content in their preferred language.

As an admin, you can create an onboarding program with courses available in specific languages. You can then assign the new joiners to the same program, gather all analytics on their progress, and collect exercises from one and the same place.

How do course editions look like for a learner?

When a course group is assigned to a learner, it will appear like any other course group. When a learner is assigned a course edition, they will automatically be assigned the language edition which matches their profile language setup.

If a learner would like to manually select which language they take the course in, they can click on the course in the course overview and select their preferred language via the dropdown.

💡 If a learner's language does not have a corresponding course edition, the default edition will be assigned.

How can admins set up a course edition?

With course editions, admins can group together courses translated into multiple languages with a few clicks.

Follow the steps below:

  1. First off, ensure your courses are Published and Visible in Manage (see here) and you have the names of the translated courses ready (learn how to translate a course here)

  2. Go to Manage > Content

  3. Use the checkboxes on the left of the content to group into editions

  4. Click Group as course editions

  5. Add the Parent title, Language and select the Default language (see above tip for more info)

  6. If you want to add more, click the button at the bottom Add another edition

Switch between course editions

In the Create section, you can use the dropdown menu to switch between different versions of your course in various languages.

If each version is in a different language, the dropdown will show the language names. If there are multiple courses in the same language, the dropdown will show the course names instead. This helps you easily find and manage the version you want to work on.

💡This feature is only available to users who have manage access or are collaborators in the course group. If you don’t have these permissions, you won’t be able to use this option.

FAQ

How is visibility of a course editions group controlled?

Only the course editions group manage page can control the visibility of whether it is visible for Everyone, in Manage or if the visibility is tailored to specific groups.

If I set the course editions group as 'Visible Everywhere' what do I see on the homepage?

You see the edition which is relevant to your language.

How do Content Attributes work with course editions?
To apply Content Attributes for all editions, you can do this through the course editions group manage page. However, if Attributes are applied to the individual editions, you only see the edition related to your language preferences and it appears in the category that edition has been assigned (along with any other categories that the course editions group has been assigned)

Where do I check if my course is published and visible in manage?

In the editor view of your course, check that it says published under the Course Edition title and you can check the course visibility in the settings section.

Will updating the original version of a course automatically update its translated versions in a course edition?

No, updating the original version of a course does not automatically update the translated versions. Each version within a course edition is treated as an individual course.
