What is the difference between Placement Tests and Personalized Reviews?

  • Placement tests appear at the beginning of a module to assess and personalize the module by skipping content the learner already masters

  • Personalized reviews appear at the end of a module to reinforce learning by targeting missed or misunderstood content.

Placement tests

The placement test is designed to assess a learner's existing knowledge on the subject matter before they start a module. It helps to personalize the learning journey by allowing learners to skip content they already know, thereby saving time and ensuring the learning material is appropriately challenging

This approach not only saves time, but also helps to build learner confidence and motivation.

💡 The placement test (and personalized review) is based upon the questions asked in each module, if "Include in tests" is toggled on. That is, you need to have at least one question in the module for a placement test to show at the end of the module.

How do Placement test work?

Firstly, the creator of the course must turn on placement tests in a modules settings (see our step by step below).
When the learner takes the course, they will see a pop-up window at the beginning of the same module, and have two options:

  • Personalize module

  • Start from scratch

Option 1: Personalize Module

If a learner chooses ‘personalize module’ they will be prompted to answer the first question of the placement test.

Once a placement test has been completed the window will close and the learner must click next.

Depending on the results of the test the following will happen:

  • If they get all the questions right the learner will skip the current module and they will be redirected to the next module (if there is one)

  • If they get some but not all questions right for every question answered correctly a section of the module is marked as complete. When proceeding through the module the learner will only have to complete cards related to the incorrect answers

  • If they get all questions wrong The learner will proceed through the module from the start

Additional info

  • All placement test questions are drawn in order of their position in the module

  • When you correctly answer a question in a placement test, that card and all the cards that precede it, up to the last card containing a question you answered incorrectly, are marked as complete. However, if all previous questions were answered correctly or there are no previous questions, all cards including and preceding the card containing that question are marked as complete.

  • If there are question blocks on a page card, you need to get all questions placed in it correct to skip it

Read more about the question card and learner assessments here.

💡 When creating questions with a placement test in mind, it is especially important to ensure that the questions are designed to accurately assess the Learner's knowledge and are appropriately challenging

Option 2: Start from scratch

Choosing this option skips the test, closes the window and the learner will proceed through the module from the start.
