In Sana, questions and learner assessments are essential to creating interactive learning experiences. These tools enable you to assess learners' knowledge, track their progress, and provide personalized feedback.

What are Questions and Learner Assessments?

  1. Create multiple-choice questions (MCQs), single select or match the pair questions

  2. Set timed assessments to control the testing scenarios

  3. Generate question variations to enhance learner engagement and knowledge retention

Assessment card

Assessments are essential tools in the learning and development process, serving as a measure of an individual's knowledge, skills, and abilities in a particular area. They provide valuable feedback, enabling tailored learning experiences and targeted upskilling efforts. Whether it's a formal examination, a practical skill test, or an informal self-assessment, these tools play a crucial role in facilitating effective learning and growth.

  9. Configure the assessment parameters (see below)

💡 Assessments can only be added as cards and can only be placed outside of modules

Configuring Assessment Parameters: Timed, Pass Rate, and More

Once you have added all the questions you should consider configuring the parameters of the assessment.

Simply click the cog icon at the top of the page.

From this assessment card configuration menu you can set the following:

  • Passing criteria allows you to choose the % of correct answers required to pass

  • Allow retries when enabled lets learners retake the assessment an unlimited amount of times

  • Hide correct answers prevents the correct answers from displaying if a learner gets a question wrong

  • Time limit sets a maximum amount of time for a learner to complete the assessment. See more below:

Timed assessments

This feature allows you to set a time limit on the assessment card, enhancing your control over testing scenarios and capping how much time learners have to answer the questions of an assessment.

Here's how it looks from a learner perspective!

What happens if a learner doesn't pass or the time runs out?

Learners will be presented with a 'try again' screen if 'Allow retries' is enabled in the assessment settings. Also Sana AI recommends cards to learners to review at the bottom of the screen. These recommendations are related to the questions answered incorrectly and are provided as long as there is content in the course that the AI deems similar enough to the respective question in the assessment.

See below for an example of what this may look like:

💡 After reviewing the recommended relevant content, learners have a higher chance of passing the assessment the next time!

What happens if a learner answered enough questions to pass the assessment but runs out of time?

The learner still has the course marked as complete, however, they would not have passed the course. If the learner is unhappy with their results and the option to retry is enabled, they can do!

Navigating between questions in assessments

To optimize the learning experience, learners can navigate back and forth between questions within the assessment. This enables learners to browse through questions, gaining an overview of the assessment, and also allows them to revisit questions they are unsure about, especially beneficial in larger assessments.

How does it work?

  • Navigation arrows: At the top of the assessment cards, learners will find back and forth arrows. These can be used to navigate to the previous or next question, regardless of whether the current question has been answered

  • Answer submission: Once a learner submits an answer to a question, it cannot be changed. However, learners can still view their submitted answers

  • Completing the assessment: After answering all questions, learners must click ‘Correct my answers’ to submit their entire assessment for grading, irrespective of their position within the question sequence

Additional info: Variations and AI generation

Varying the questions in a course is a great way of helping learners stay engaged and retain new knowledge, instead of simply memorizing answers. After writing or generating a question, you can write up to 10 variations for each multiple-choice question, or let Sana’s AI generate them for you.

Here’s how it works:

  • Add variation: After writing or generating a question, choose Add variation at the bottom of the question block. This creates a new empty question variation for you to fill out.

  • Generate variation: To let Sana suggest a variation, choose Generate variation in the drop-down menu.

  • Refine and approve: You can edit and refine any question, cycle through the questions using the numbered buttons at the bottom of the question block, and delete the questions you don’t need.

Variations will be cycled through randomly for the learner, so that they don’t repeat the same questions over and over again.
